The oil will keep the oxygen from creating rust. It is necessary to keep the rust at a minimum as the rust will make tiny dimples on the surface of the block and can have a negative impression on metal as you hammer on it. Extremely fine emery cloth will take the rust right off, if and when the rust appears.
